Elevate & Innovate

A41 | Project Summary

For a growing family in Denver with two remote-working parents, this thoughtfully designed pop-top addition by NAGY Design transformed their single-story home into a functional and stylish two-story retreat. Staying true to the home's original footprint, we expanded upward to add two secondary bedrooms and a shared full bathroom, creating dedicated spaces for the children.

The new primary suite offers a luxurious five-piece bath, a walk-in closet, a private office, and direct access to a covered second-floor balcony—a peaceful retreat with views of the surrounding neighborhood.

On the main level, we reimagined the existing layout to better support daily living. A former bedroom was converted into a light-filled home office, while the living room was opened up to foster a more connected, family-friendly atmosphere. A convenient powder room replaced the original bathroom, and the laundry area was thoughtfully relocated to the main level for improved functionality.

This pop-top renovation perfectly balances the needs of modern family life and remote work, offering elevated comfort, increased livable space, and a cohesive architectural design that enhances both everyday routines and long-term flexibility.

Common Questions

  • The costs associated with adding a second-story addition vary depending on factors such as the size of the addition, materials used, labor costs, and location. On average, homeowners can expect to invest between $100,000 to $300,000 or more for such a project.

  • Adding a second story requires careful consideration of structural elements to ensure safety and stability. Factors such as load-bearing walls, foundation reinforcement, and support beams must be evaluated by a structural engineer to meet building code requirements.

  • Adding a second story can significantly increase the overall property value and resale potential. Homes with additional living space are often highly desirable to buyers and may command higher prices in the real estate market.

  • Obtaining permits and adhering to zoning regulations are crucial steps in adding a second story. Homeowners must obtain the necessary permits from the local building department and ensure compliance with zoning ordinances, setback requirements, and height restrictions.
